Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction can be a daunting process, but it’s actually a common procedure. So what is tooth extraction? Simply put, it is the removal of a tooth from your mouth.

Reasons include:

  • Crowding
  • Infection
  • Decay

Here at My Dentist, we aim to make the process as stress-free as possible. It’s typically a quick procedure and is more straightforward than you think it would be. We can numb the tooth using anaesthetic to make the process as painless as possible.

Tooth extraction is usually put on the table if the damaged tooth cannot be treated with a filling, crown, or root canal.

Come see a dentist or specialist here at My Dentist so we can assess whether the tooth needs to be extracted or not. Good oral hygiene and care like regular dentist visits can prevent the need for tooth extraction, especially if caught early on.

Anxiety-free Treatment with IV Sedation

For added comfort, we can offer IV sedation. This common and safe option gives you a state of deep relaxation and often temporary amnesia, making you feel as though you slept through the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does a tooth extraction hurt?

No, the procedure itself should not be painful. We use a local anaesthetic to completely numb the area. You may feel pressure or movement, but not sharp pain. For anxious patients, we also offer IV sedation so you feel relaxed and comfortable.

2. How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

Most people feel back to normal within a few days, with complete healing of the gum over 1–2 weeks. Wisdom tooth extractions may take a little longer. We provide tailored aftercare instructions to speed up recovery.

3. Can I go back to work or school the same day?

It depends on the type of extraction. For a simple tooth removal, some patients feel well enough after a few hours, but we generally recommend taking the rest of the day off to rest and reduce swelling.

4. What can I eat after a tooth extraction?

Stick to soft foods such as soup, yoghurt, smoothies, scrambled eggs, or mashed potatoes for the first 24–48 hours. Avoid hot, spicy, hard, or crunchy foods during this period.

5. How much does tooth extraction cost?

Costs vary depending on whether it’s a simple or surgical extraction. Extractions start from $290 for a standard tooth. We’ll always give you a clear quote before treatment.

6. Does ACC cover tooth extractions?

ACC may cover the cost if your tooth was damaged due to an accident or trauma, but not if it’s from decay or infection. We can help advise you if your situation qualifies.

7. Will I need a replacement for the extracted tooth?

Not always. If it’s a wisdom tooth or a tooth at the back, replacement may not be necessary. But if the missing tooth affects your bite or smile, we’ll discuss options such as dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures.

8. How do I prevent infection after a tooth extraction?

We’ll give you detailed aftercare, including rinsing instructions and when to use pain relief. It’s important to avoid smoking, vigorous rinsing, and drinking through a straw for the first 24 hours, as these can disturb healing and cause a dry socket.

9. What is a dry socket, and how do I know if I have it?

A dry socket happens when the blood clot that normally forms in the extraction site is dislodged or dissolves too soon. It can cause severe pain, bad breath, and delayed healing. If this happens, contact us immediately so we can treat it.

10. How soon can I brush my teeth after an extraction?

You can gently brush your other teeth the same day, but avoid brushing near the extraction site for the first 24 hours. After that, use a soft toothbrush and rinse with warm salt water as directed by your dentist.

11. Do I need antibiotics after a tooth extraction?

Not usually. Antibiotics are only prescribed if you have a higher risk of infection, for example due to a medical condition or if the extraction was complex.

12. Can I get IV sedation for tooth extraction at My Dentist?

Yes. We offer safe and effective IV sedation to help anxious patients feel calm. Many people describe it as feeling like they “slept through the procedure.”
